Why We Built Biscuits & Beans Cat Café

Meet Chris and Charlotte Goebel, founders of Biscuits & Beans Cat Café.

Biscuits & Beans Cat Café is built on a simple belief: exceptional service should come standard, and every cat deserves a second chance. We set out to create a place where people gather easily, cats are cared for thoughtfully, and everyday visits quietly support something bigger – ethical rescue, calm adoption, and local impact that lasts. This isn’t a novelty or a pop-in experience. It’s a community space designed with intention.

Our café and cat lounge were purposefully created around wellbeing for all guests, for our team, and especially for cats who are too often overlooked. The café is open to everyone, no reservations required. The cat lounge is a separate, reservation-based space designed to be calm and low-stress, where adoptable cats from trusted rescue partners can relax, socialize, and be seen without pressure. Adoption is never expected, but when the connection is right, the process is thoughtful, respectful, and smooth.

From the beginning, we made a clear choice to be a no-tip café. We believe great service shouldn’t rely on obligation or awkward screens. Too often, tipping shifts the responsibility for fair wages from businesses to guests. Instead, we pay our team dependable, fair wages and price our menu to support that model from the start. No service guilt. Just genuine hospitality. No Tips, Just Tails – because kindness shouldn’t cost extra.

Alongside the café operates our sister nonprofit, Just Tails Foundation for Cat Care. The café and the Foundation are separate by design, but united by shared values. The Foundation works independently to support partner rescues through food, litter, medical care, spay and neuter services, rehabilitation, and adoption support. Transparency, responsibility, and doing the right thing – even when it’s harder – guide both organizations.

We’re starting here in Winchester, but we’re thinking long-term. Every system behind Biscuits & Beans is built with intention, carefully documented, and designed to be responsible, repeatable, and community-first. Our goal is thoughtful growth, not fast expansion, because cats deserve better systems, not just good intentions.

A Personal Note

Biscuits & Beans Cat Café is deeply personal to us. After retiring early at the end of 2022 and relocating to the greater Winchester area, we found ourselves grateful and settled – but quietly missing a sense of purpose. It became clear that we wanted to build something that mattered locally, something rooted in kindness, community, and ultimately meaningful cat care.

This café grew from that realization. Not as a hobby. Not as a novelty. But as a commitment to showing up for our community, for local rescues, and for the many cats who are too easily overlooked. We didn’t want to slow down. We want to do work that means something.

Come Say Hello

Reserve your spot in the cat lounge. Coffee’s great, but the company’s better.
